A sampling of my book cover and interior illustration work, as well as a few specialty images for websites and Kickstarter campaigns. All paintings were completed in Photoshop, having been concepted and drawn using traditional tools. I often employ Poser and Sketchup software during the preliminary production phase, and live model photography as needed per project.
Particular challenges for this illustration were to capture the essence of the concept “inciting incident”, one of the particular facets of the Reckless Deck: Psyche card set. The AD and I went through several concept ideas before settling on this one, which captured the idea perfectly. The idea being a noir detective confronting an escalating set of occurrences to the inciting incident when the endgame is put in motion for good or ill. I leave it to the viewer to imagine what comes next.

This is an example of an illustration built around reference photography. I used an anatomical model of a skull wrapped in paper towel strips, as well as photos of my hands holding a round vase with a light inside it, to establish the basis of the image. I then completed my refined drawing using those references, with a judicious amount of artistic license to reflect the idea I saw in my head initially.
